Terazosin, alpha-1-adrenergic blockers, used in the treatment of hypertension by
relaxing veins and arteries so that blood can flow more easily and to treat
benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and
prostate. High blood pressure increases the workload of the heart and arteries, which
damages the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys, resulting in a
stroke, heart attack, or kidney failure. These risks may be less likely to occur
if blood pressure is controlled. The hydrochloride salt of terazosin is a white, crystalline powder;
freely soluble in water and isotonic saline; melting point 260 - 262 C;
administered orally. Chemical designation is
(RS)-1-(4-amino-6,7-dimethoxy-2-quinazolinyl) -4-[(tetra-hydro-2-furanyl)
carbonyl]-piperazine monohydrochloride. |
